Authorities in San Bernardino County have been seriously toiling to curb the troubling rise in retail thefts that have beleaguered local businesses and shoppers. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department led a coalition of law enforcement agencies in a concerted crackdown known as Operation Smash & Grab, targeting the Victoria Gardens Shopping Center and several retail hotspots in Apple Valley, Victorville, and Hesperia. Despite the mundane name, the seven-day sting proved to be a productive endeavor, rounding up 12 felony suspects along with 52 misdemeanor miscreants, and recovering stolen property valued at $6,865.57.
According to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the onslaught of thefts which began spiking in November 2023 has been deteriorating the shopping experience. Crews of criminals have been reportedly using aggressive tactics to rapidly ransack stores, underscoring an urgent need for law enforcement intervention. "These violent criminals terrorize the citizens of San Bernardino County by utilizing intimidation tactics and a mob mentality that creates an unsafe and uncomfortable shopping environment for our residents."
The multifaceted approach of this operation brought together various departments, including the Sheriff's Gangs/Narcotics Division, San Bernardino County Probation Department, Homeland Security Investigations, California Highway Patrol, and the San Bernardino Police Department. Their mission: to disrupt and ultimately disband the intricately organized theft rings believed to be inflicting considerable financial wounds on retail businesses.
