Vandalism has surged in parts of Atlanta and DeKalb County, with over 100 MARTA bus shelters targeted between December 1 and December 10. The shelters, primarily located near Memorial Drive, have suffered significant damage, including graffiti and broken glass panels, with repair costs exceeding $20,000. MARTA spokesperson Angela Jetty highlighted the unique challenge posed by the graffiti: “It’s a kind of graffiti. It renders the glass impossible to clean,” she told FOX 5 Atlanta.
This spree of destruction has not only left MARTA with a hefty bill but also significantly compromised the comfort and security of riders. The vandals used a paint designed to permanently mar the glass, complicating cleanup efforts and hastening the need to completely replace the damaged panels. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, replacing a single glass panel costs around $200, and one shelter has been hit repeatedly, indicating a persistent issue.
The situation resonates with the daily commuters who rely on the bus system. As per WSB-TV, MARTA rider Shanice Allen simply states the senselessness of the situation: "I just think that it’s really like careless. We need the shelters to keep us from the weather and everything." The destruction of these shelters not only represents a financial toll for MARTA but also a profound inconvenience for passengers seeking protection from the elements while they wait for transportation.
Despite the desire to quickly apprehend those responsible, MARTA faces the challenge of limited surveillance at the affected shelters. No arrests have yet been made, and the lack of security footage makes identifying suspects particularly difficult. As reported by WSB-TV, much of the vandalism occurred late at night, complicating efforts to even simply detect when the acts occurred. MARTA police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward as they endeavor to fully repair and to prevent future incidents.
Comedian and frequent MARTA user Kewon Holland gave voice to the frustration felt by many, asserting to WSB-TV, "It’s crazy for something to happen like that. People need to be more considerate."
