A standoff in Southeast Austin that mobilized the city's SWAT team concluded without violence early this morning. The Austin Police Department reported via social media around 1:40 a.m. that the situation had been peacefully resolved in the 2500 block of Oltorf Street after a man with a machete-like knife barricaded himself, as announced in a statement obtained by FOX 7 Austin.
The incident unfolded yesterday evening when, at approximately 9:56 p.m., December 2, officers responded to a disturbance call concerning an individual armed with a large knife. Upon encountering difficulties in establishing contact with the man, APD deployed their SWAT team as a reinforcement, according to a report published by MSN.
"With the expertise of Patrol officers, and other specialized units on scene, multiple attempts were made to contact the suspect. the suspect eventually came out and complied with officers' commands which helped bring the SWAT callout to a safe and peaceful resolution," Officer Leah Ratliff with APD stated in remarks shared by FOX 7 Austin. The man in question was not immediately identified, but he was already wanted by law enforcement for a prior warrant on charges of aggravated assault.
Following the de-escalation of the situation, APD has confirmed that there is no ongoing risk to the public at large. More details concerning this incident are expected to be disclosed after further investigation, said police. No injuries were reported among the police force or the community, from this indubitably tense episode that fortunately, turned to calm in the small hours of the night.
