A Pearland man sparked a tense standoff with local law enforcement Sunday morning after shots were fired inside an apartment complex, leading to a response from SWAT officials, Pearland Police Department said. The incident, which unfolded at 2701 Old Alvin Rd., began around 8:45 a.m. when a resident reported bullet holes in the door of a neighboring unit, as communicated by KPRC 2.
On arrival at the scene, officers discovered that the bullet holes appeared to have originated from within the apartment, and upon attempting to make contact with the individual inside, the suspect discharged multiple shots toward the responding officers, using a ballistic shield they fortunately escaped injury even as an officer’s shield was struck by gunfire, according to officials. The standoff proceeded to last approximately three hours until SWAT negotiators made contact and the man, later identified as 43-year-old Jorge Pineda, surrendered peacefully.
Witnesses to the incident, Stephanie and Ty Womack, spoke to KPRC 2’s Corley Peel about their experience, with Stephanie noting, "It’s kind of scary knowing that it could have ricocheted and hit us," and Ty recounting the moment Pineda walked out with his hands up as a "weird way to wake up to morning." Meanwhile, authorities breathed a sigh of relief that none of their own were harmed, attributing the avoidance of injuries to the efficacy of their equipment.
The Pearland Police Department revealed that the suspect had fired at least 20 rounds from inside the unit, with ABC13 reporting that the officers did not return fire during the confrontation, a detail that highlights the fraught yet constrained nature of the encounter; and while the suspect is now in custody, the department has not released further details on charges as the investigation remains in progress.
