A pedestrian who was struck and killed by a Long Beach Transit bus on the evening of Tuesday last week has now been determined to have died by suicide, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. The incident, which occurred on Shoreline Drive and 7th Street, was originally responded to by the Long Beach Police Department at approximately 6:54 P.M., as stated in a press release by the Long Beach Police Department.
Upon arrival, Long Beach Fire Department personnel were already providing aid to the woman but were unable to save her, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of a Long Beach Transit bus reported he had collided with the pedestrian, who was in the roadway and outside of a crosswalk at the time of the collision. "At this time, speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the collision," according to the report.
The name of the deceased has yet to be released, pending an identification by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner and the notification of the next of kin. The investigation into the incident now ruled a suicide remains ongoing, and Detective David Dougherty with the LBPD's Collision Investigation Detail is reportedly seeking anyone who may have witnessed the collision. Information can be provided directly to Detective Dougherty at (562) 570-7355, and anonymous tips may be tendered through "LA Crime Stoppers." The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), offering confidential support for those in distress.
