Philadelphia drivers should expect delays on I-76 West starting today. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will close the right lane between the Vare Avenue on-ramp and South Street off-ramp for bridge repairs. The closure will take place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM today.
According to a release on the Official Website of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the work is necessary to maintain the infrastructure, focusing on repairing deteriorating concrete on bridges supporting I-76 over Reed Street, Wharton Street, Grays Ferry Avenue, the Schuylkill River, and CSX rail tracks. While all ramps to and from the expressway will remain open, there may be lane closures and occasional stoppages on the ramp from Vare Avenue to westbound I-76.
To minimize disruptions, PennDOT advises drivers to plan alternative routes due to expected delays from the lane closure. The maintenance work is essential but weather dependent. Commuters can use the 511PA website and app for real-time traffic and weather updates.
Travelers can check current and upcoming construction impacts across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties on PennDOT’s District 6 Traffic Bulletin. For more details on infrastructure and major projects in District 6, visit the PennDOT website.
