The Philadelphia Phillies strengthened their rotation by acquiring Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins, as confirmed by both teams on Sunday. The trade is part of the Marlins' strategy to focus on emerging talent. Luzardo, who has dealt with injuries including a lumbar stress reaction that cut his 2024 season short, posted a 5.00 ERA over 12 starts for Miami. The Phillies are hoping he will return to his 2023 form, when he made 32 starts with a 3.58 ERA and 208 strikeouts, according to NBC Miami.
In return, the Marlins have netted themselves two top prospects: outfielder Emaarion Boyd and infielder Starlyn Caba. Boyd, 21, was the Phillies' 11th round pick in the 2022 draft and has since racked up game time in 198 minor league matches. Meanwhile, Caba, 19, signed as an international free agent and has shown off his skills in 116 minor league games. Amid the shuffle, the Phillies also drafted in catcher Paul McIntosh and made roster room by designating left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment, as stated by WFLA News.
Luzardo joins a strong Phillies pitching staff, including all-stars Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. The team is preparing for the 2025 season, aiming to use Luzardo's experience to strengthen their chances in the competitive National League. His addition is expected to complement the Phillies' mix of young talent and veteran experience.
The Marlins continue trading established players for up-and-coming talent, having already traded Luis Arraez and Jazz Chisholm Jr. earlier in the 2024 season. "Two premium athletes, two excellent prospects," WFLA News quoted the Marlins on the incoming Boyd and Caba.
