Philadelphia police are currently investigating a double shooting that occurred in the Summerdale section of the city, an incident leaving a young man and woman injured while seated in a parked car. The shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. on Monday along the 5900 block of Algon Avenue. According to 6abc, a 22-year-old man was shot in the back of the neck, and a 22-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder. Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries, the outlet reported.
The violence unfolded just outside one of the victim's Northeast Philadelphia homes. Responding officers found the victims able to communicate and walk despite their injuries, officials noted, saying they were "both very, very lucky, they are both in stable condition." This comment was made by Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, as reported by NBC Philadelphia. Small also mentioned that 22 shell casings were discovered at the scene, and at least 10 bullets had struck the vehicle.
The investigation is still underway, and authorities are unsure if the pair were intentionally targeted. Police found that four individuals were caught on private surveillance cameras fleeing the area shortly after the gunfire erupted, a detail confirmed by NBC Philadelphia. However, as of Tuesday morning, no motive or suspect descriptions have been released.
