The annals of American fashion are about to get a little brighter this spring with an exhibition dedicated to the work of designer Anna Sui. Announced by the Phoenix Art Museum, the exhibition titled "The World of Anna Sui" is set to open on April 13. This retrospective promises to be a feast for the eyes, featuring over 100 ensembles from Sui's own archive, as well as her latest collection, as reporetd by Phoenix New Times.
According to Phoenix New Times, the exhibition not only showcases Sui's personal collection but also includes a curated selection of garments from Phoenix Art Museum's fashion collection. Jeremy Mikolajczak, Sybil Harrington Director and CEO of the museum, highlighted Sui's influence on fashion, particularly noting her impact on 1990s style and its resurgence with today's Gen Z. "Anna Sui defined a fashion generation," Mikolajczak said.
Equally significant to the Phoenix cultural scene is the timing of this event. It is the latest in a series of high-profile exhibitions that the art museum has become known for. A tip for those planning a visit: the museum's hours are Wednesday from 10am to 9pm and Thursday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm, as paced by Artforum.
Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion at the museum, expressed her admiration for Sui's depth of knowledge and her ability to interweave it into her designs. "Anna Sui is a self-taught historian of culture, art, and fashion, and a true master at threading narratives and aesthetics from seemingly conflicting genres into her designs", Jean told Phoenix New Times. She also pointed out how the exhibit offers a unique look at pop-culture history through its visual display. "The World of Anna Sui" will remain on display at Phoenix Art Museum until September 28, granting ample time to experience the convergence of music, art styles, and various fashion trends that define Sui's four-decade-spanning career.
