With the holiday spirit at its peak and the smell of freshly baked cookies in the air, the Phoenix Fire Department is shifting the focus to safety. On Thursday, the department, alongside local partners, hosted their annual Holiday Safety Media Event. Held at the Phoenix Fire Training Academy, the gathering featured crucial tips and live demonstrations highlighting the uninvited dangers of the season: fires, particularly from kitchen mishaps and dry Christmas trees.
The event not only served up a dose of reality but also came with practical advice on the sensible use of fireworks, a holiday staple. "Legal fireworks go on sale December 10th through January 3rd and are able to be used December 26th through January 4th," according to the information shared. However, city ordinances lace the festive light shows with some strict timelines; prohibiting their use overnight from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., with the exception of New Year's and the Fourth of July celebrations.
A reminder of the damage that can result from improper firework use was on display in a live demonstration aimed at educating the public on potential injuries. The Phoenix Fire Department's data reveals that injuries typically occur when people are hit directly, or when they're within too close proximity to the fireworks.
Choosing a safe location, one clear of dry brush or other fuel sources, is critical. Illegal aerial fireworks have a reputation for igniting tree fires, which can quickly spread havoc to nearby properties. After the show is over, another key tip is proper disposal. "It is important to soak them for at least 24-hours prior to putting them in the trash can," suggested officials. The department also advised keeping trash cans away from homes and garages, to prevent potential fires.
Securing pets is a must. The loud booms and crackles of fireworks can terrify animals, leading to unfortunate cases of them running away or even causing injury due to biting in fear. The holidays might be about warm gatherings and bright lights, but ensuring a safe environment for all is the Phoenix Fire Department's top priority, as echoed in their holiday wishes to the community.
