The Phoenix Police Department released a video briefing on an officer-involved shooting that occurred on December 2 near 20th Street and Union Hills Drive, following a domestic violence call. According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to a call about a son, allegedly involved with drugs, threatening his mother.
Earlier, the mother took a knife away from her son and called 911 to report his aggressive behavior. While en route, officers learned of an outstanding arrest warrant for the son. Upon arrival, they were led into the home by a man and woman, with the woman identifying the suspect as her son. The son then emerged from a bedroom armed, leading to the shooting.
Despite the chaotic events, only the suspect was injured, with a gunshot wound to his arm. After treatment from fire department personnel and release from the hospital, he was booked on multiple felonies, including aggravated assault. Officers found a knife at the scene and a pepper spray bottle on the kitchen floor, which the man had thrown, as shown in the officers' body camera footage.
The officer involved, a veteran with over 20 years of service at the Black Mountain Precinct, is under investigation to determine if his actions followed department policy and the law. An internal review is underway by the Professional Standards Bureau, alongside a criminal investigation that will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Some body-worn camera footage has been redacted to remove personal information before being released to the media for independent review.
