The Phoenix Police Department is on alert as scammers make calls spoofing the department's Crime Stop number, attempting to con residents into giving up money. As reported by ABC15, the scheme involves calls where the scammer poses as a police or government official and demands payment from the victim.
It has come to light that these perpetrators are manipulating caller ID systems to make it appear as if the Crime Stop number, 602-262-6151, is calling. This particular number is in reality meant for the public to file reports or request police assistance, not for soliciting payments.
The police warn that this type of scam can be persuasive, as the scammers are skilled in impersonating officials to create a sense of urgency and legitimacy. The official Crime Stop number is strictly for incoming calls from the public, and the department adamantly states that no legitimate call from Phoenix PD will ever involve payment requests. The department has encouraged anyone receiving such fraudulent calls to reach out to the authorities.
Amidst these deceptive activities, the police department urges the community to stay vigilant. If a call appears to be from Phoenix PD and its legitimacy is in doubt, residents are advised to hang up and report the incident. Police officials have reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and ensuring the community is aware of these deceptive practices, stating, "The Phoenix Police Department will never contact you to solicit anything including bank account information, remote access to your computer, money orders or gift cards," according to the statement reported by ABC15.
