A Placer County man who was taken into custody over the death of his neighbor has been released from jail pending further investigation. According to a statement from the city officials, which was detailed in a report by FOX40, the trial involves the 50-year-old man in connection with the death of 34-year-old Jonathan Michael Williams following an altercation at the Lincoln Crossing area.
Police discovered Williams deceased within the home of the suspect around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lincoln Police Department is currently collaborating with the Placer County District Attorney's office to scrutinize the evidence and the circumstances that led to the incident, as per the statement obtained by FOX40. Under law, an individual must be charged within 48 hours of an arrest, and the suspect was released due to the necessity for extended investigation.
Under scrutiny is the reason Williams was present in the suspect's home, the cause behind the shooting, and whether Williams' presence was lawful at the time of the shooting. "Initial arrests are made based upon a probable cause standard, which was met in this case," the City explained. "In contrast, a charging decision can be made only where the evidence would support a finding beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed without lawful self-defense," as per FOX40.
The details of the arrest and subsequent release were echoed in a separate report by KCRA, which also referenced the presiding statutory presumption that a homeowner using deadly force within their residence is believed to have acted out of reasonable fear for their life or safety. The statement provided by the Lincoln Police Department hinted at self-defense, stating, "The law presumes that a homeowner who uses deadly force inside their own residence acted in reasonable fear of death or great bodily injury to himself when the force was used against an unlawful intruder."
While the police did verify that the shooting took place in the home of the suspect, further inquiries are required to establish a complete narrative of the event. Lincoln police and city officials are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the department's non-emergency line at 916-645-4040. The involvement of the neighbor, once publicized by KCRA, has been removed from reporting since his release. His identity has not been charged in connection with the death of Williams, has now been concealed out of respect for the ongoing investigation.
