Patrol officers in Plano, Texas, put their instincts to work last Friday when they were alerted to a stolen Kia in their area and later thwarted a potential series of car thefts. The chain of events unfolded on November 30 when a complainant signaled that her husband's car alarm had gone off due to an attempted theft, which officers connected to the initial stolen Kia report. The suspects fled in the same vehicle, linking the two incidents. Officer Sadler, drawing on his experience with similar crimes and aware of a disturbing trend among juveniles known as the "Kia Boyz," predicted the thieves would continue their spree nearby, according to the Plano Texas Police Department's social media post.
In the presence of marked patrol units and a TXDPS helicopter, Officer Sadler's hunch was confirmed at a local apartment complex when he spotted multiple individuals behaving suspiciously around another vehicle and commencing to run as police approached. The car was tampered with, sporting smashed windows and a busted dashboard, the scene was unmistakably a tableau of criminal intent. Despite setting a perimeter, they apprehended only four youths who were identified by Officer Sadler as the ones seen exiting the stolen Kia while the potential fifth suspect remained unaccounted for. The apprehended suspects, two females, and two males, claimed they did not live at the apartment complex, but Officer Sadler recognized them from the earlier stolen Kia incident.
Support from patrol units and the assistance of a police helicopter played a crucial role in containing and detaining the suspects. Alongside the efforts of Officer Goetz and K9 Officer Vaughn, the team was able to detain and arrest the four juveniles, later booking them into the Collin County Juvenile Detention Center.
