After a series of legal proceedings that spanned several months, Nathan Darren Isenberg, age 21, has been sentenced to nearly a decade behind bars. According to an announcement by Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, Isenberg will serve 114 months in prison for charges related to an attempted car theft and a consequential shooting in Portland's Mill Park neighborhood.
The conviction stems from an incident that unraveled on April 17, 2023, when Portland Police responded to a shooting near NE Caruthers St. and NE 124th Avenue. They found a male victim with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, a wound serious enough to cause severe injury. The stepson of the victim reported witnessing the shooting, which occurred when the victim approached two individuals breaking into his stepson's parked car. Forensic analysis matched latent fingerprints found on the vehicle to Isenberg.
Throughout the trial, Deputy District Attorneys Eric Palmer and Elena Langer represented the state. On December 4, 2024, a judge found Isenberg guilty of multiple charges, including attempted murder in the second degree and assault in the first degree. The sentence, handed down by Judge Melvin Oden-Orr last Friday, also includes three years of post-prison supervision, as reported by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
The aftermath of the crime has rippled through the community, placing the victim and his family under a distressing spotlight. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office has publicly acknowledged this impact while also extending gratitude towards everyone involved in bringing the case to a close, especially Detective Brian Dale of the Portland Police Bureau and MCDA victim advocate Julie Jacobs for their meticulous dedication. Isenberg has now been transferred to the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections, where he is to begin serving his term.
