Portland authorities are on high alert after reports emerged detailing sightings of a suspicious vehicle in the Hillsdale Neighborhood. The incident has put locals, particularly students of Ida B. Wells High School, on edge. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has answered community concerns by raising attention to the incidents and stepping up patrol in the affected areas.
According to an alert issued by the Portland Police Bureau, the first of two disturbing encounters occurred on November 20, around 6:30 p.m., when a black Hyundai Sonata seemingly followed a student as she made her way home from practice. The PPB states, "The student indicated that the Hyundai Sonata, with at least two men inside, would slow down when she slowed down, and speed up when she sped up." The incident escalated when one of the men temporarily exited the vehicle, prompting the student to hide and eventually flee to safety.
Further raising concerns, a second incident, which came to police attention on Monday, dates back to November 14 at approximately 12:30 p.m. This time, a student walking near Ida B. Wells High School was approached by the same vehicle description, encountering two men who attempted to engage with her. Acting quickly, she hid within the bushes as the vehicle circled and, not long after, vacated the vicinity.
The increased police presence is hoped to comfort the residents, with officers actively patrolling to keep a vigilant eye on the neighborhood. To prepare for any similar situations, "PPB would like to remind parents to talk to their children about having a plan in a situation such as this and to never approach a vehicle driven by someone they do not know," as quoted by the Portland Police Bureau on their official website. Residents can also contribute by remaining observant and swiftly reporting any suspicious activities or vehicles matching the description to law enforcement.
Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is urged to come forward. Updates will be shared as new details emerge. In the meantime, community members can find safety tips and the latest news on the Portland Police Bureau's official page.
