On Christmas Day, residents of Quincy experienced an unwelcome surprise as a large water main break disrupted service, prompting a swift response from city crews amid holiday celebrations. The break, reported in the vicinity of Hancock Street at Cliveden Street, led to many in the area being left without water or encountering low pressure conditions. The Quincy Police Department announced via social media that the Department of Public Works (DPW) and Water Department were on the scene, working diligently to resolve the issue.
Hancock Street, a main thoroughfare running from Granite to Walter Hannon Parkway, was closed off to traffic to facilitate the necessary repairs, creating a disruption for both residents and holiday travelers. Officials asked the public to avoid the affected area and assured that updates would be provided as more information became available. The Quincy Police emphasized that the dispatch center should be reserved for emergency calls only, urging residents to refrain from calling about water main-related issues unless it's an absolute necessity.
Late into the Christmas evening, updates from officials painted a picture of progress. "Update: Quick work by our DPW and Water Department crews. Hancock Street is now reopened, Dunford Drive (Old Cliveden Street) will remained closed for the night," Quincy Police Department shared in a follow-up post. They also noted that "Water and pressures have been restored to most residents and the Water Department will be working through the night to repair the broken main."
The Quincy Police Facebook post also contained a safety advisory for those near the affected area: "Please use caution in the area as the roads and sidewalk, although treated remain icy!" Despite the inconvenience and hazardous conditions, the quick response from city crews helped restore some normalcy.
