Starting January 8, local children between the ages of 5 and 12 will have the opportunity to dive, or rather, plié, into the world of ballet from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Details released by the City of Raleigh announce a curriculum that ranges from the fundamental ballet positions to more complex combinations.
The classes promise to be a blend of serious technique and playful learning, perfect for both beginners and those with a little more experience behind their belt of tutus. Expect the youngsters to come out of each session with improved strength, balance, and spatial awareness — not speaking of the flexibility they'll likely gain by stretching muscles they didn't even know they had. Parents are advised that while ballet shoes are a bonus, they're not mandatory for the dance floor. Just ensure the kiddos are decked out in attire that won't restrict their grand jetés or impede their pirouettes.
And while the cost of extracurriculars can often stretch a family budget thinner than a dancer's tights, the community center's program won't be asking for all that many Washingtons. Residents of Raleigh are looking at a $30 fee, while non-residents will need to loosen their purse strings to the tune of $45. It's a small price to pay for a foundation in an art form that's both physically demanding and culturally enriching.
