As the chill of winter descends upon Saint Paul, Ramsey County has stepped up to provide crucial support for those without shelter. Starting Wednesday, Dec. 11, the county has opened a series of Winter Warming Spaces to offer a respite from the harsh temperatures expected during the coldest months. These spaces will be available through March 31, according to a statement obtained by Ramsey County.
To accommodate various demographics, the county has designated specific locations tailored for women, single adult males, and families with youth. The Holy Christian Cathedral Church, located at 125 Stevens St. W, is extending its embrace specifically for women. For single adult males, both the Phalen Activity Center and Newell Park Building will open their doors.
Further addressing the needs of families and youth up to age 24, the St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church at 100 N Oxford St. begins welcoming guests on Sunday, Dec. 15. These welcoming spaces will not only provide seating and blankets but also light snacks and warming supplies like mittens and hats when available. Acknowledging the importance of accessibility, the county ensures that guests can utilize a free shuttle service operating from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily.
In addition, before the official opening of the designated Winter Warming Spaces, the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Housing Stability Department, had already opened the doors of the Law Enforcement Center at 425 Grove Street from yesterday evening to this morning.
