Mecklenburg County's Tax Collector's Office is ringing the bell for taxpayers, sending out a last call via postcards to remind everyone of the looming January 6, 2025, deadline. Taxpayers are urged to pay their 2024 property taxes by this date to skip the extra charge of interest. Originally shopped out in July, these tax bills concern properties owned as of January 1, a soothing note amidst the din of daily expenses.
For new property owners unfamiliar with the process, the county encourages a quick dive into their tax bill lookup tool or a call to 311 to verify their payment standings. The Tax Collector's Office issues a stark reminder: Payments need the U.S. Postal Service's blessing in the form of a postmark by January 6, or earlier, to avoid the additional interest. In the twist of irony, payments metered but not postmarked by January 6 will find their fate in the hands of the date the Tax Collector receives them.
Mecklenburg County doesn't skimp on payment avenues. From the comfort of their digital realm or the firmness of a phone grip, taxpayers can settle their dues online or by calling 1-800-994-1026. Traditionalists can mail their check or money order, detailed with their tax bill number, to specified P.O. boxes, depending on whether their payment stub is tag-teaming with the bill. And for the tactile taxpayers, an in-person option waits at 3205 Freedom Drive, Suite 3000, Charlotte, NC, where doors remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Convenience comes at a price, however. Those opting for credit or debit cards will have to shrug off a service fee unless they bow to the eCheck option which graciously declines to dip into their wallets. As per North Carolina General Statute 105-348, the excuse of an MIA tax bill won't hold up in the court of financial obligation. The message is clear: Pay up now or pay more later.
