In Rome, Georgia, when a veteran city worker was killed after a trench collapsed at a construction site late Thursday night. James Rayburn, a 23-year employee of the city's water and sewer department, was one of two workers trapped when the trench they were repairing caved in.

FOX 5 Atlanta reports that the accident took place near Coosawattee Avenue and Shorter Avenue, next to the Circle K. It was around 11 p.m. when the Rome Fire Department responded to the call along with other emergency services to aid in the rescue effort. Rayburn succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the local hospital.

"We lost the glue to our family," Marissa Rayburn, his daughter, told FOX 5 Atlanta. Nicole Rayburn, another daughter of James, reminisced about her father's love for softball and the Atlanta Braves.

Meanwhile, the other worker, identified as Michael Walters by Atlanta News First, was hospitalized with a leg injury. The city of Rome released a statement asking for privacy and respect during this challenging time and extended its deepest condolences to all who are mourning.
