The Rowlett Police Department resumed a search for a suspect who had escaped from custody, nearly six hours after announcing the suspension of their efforts. Last Thursday, the Rowlett neighborhood was on high alert when a woman in handcuffs, identified as 22-year-old Quanesha Mason, managed to flee police custody while wearing Christmas pajamas and no shoes, sparking an extensive search operation.
According to FOX 4, the incident began when Mason escaped after being handcuffed last Thursday afternoon for failing to provide identification. The escape prompted a search in the vicinity of Rowlett Road and Hickory Road. Rowlett police said Mason was put in handcuffs, and was next spotted fleeing on Ring camera footage from Floyd Smith's home. "We are curious where she was headed," Smith told FOX 4. "You know, barefoot and cold. I think she had to be hiding somewhere in the neighborhood."
Initially, the search for Mason was called off just before 8 p.m. last Thursday, with police citing no indication of any threat to the public. However, in an update given by the police at about 11:35 p.m., it was confirmed that the authorities had taken the suspect back into custody, as noted by WFAA. The reason why Mason was initially placed under arrest remains unclear at this stage.
Following her recapture, Mason was booked into the Rowlett city jail, with an impending transfer to the Dallas County jail on a charge of escape from custody. The Rowlett Police Department has not provided further details on how Mason managed to escape or where she was found. This is considered a developing story, and more information is expected to be released in the coming days.
