Attention Sacramento residents interested in urban planning: the City's Planning Academy is now accepting applications for its 2025 program. This free, eleven-week course will begin on March 3 and is designed to educate, engage, and empower residents, business owners, and community leaders in the city's planning process.
According to the City of Sacramento, "Planning Academy equips Sacramentans to become strong advocates for a well-planned community," as stated by Tom Pace, the City’s Community Development Department Director. The program promises to cover everything from housing and transportation planning to historic preservation and climate action planning.
Over the past decades, the academy has graduated more than 500 individuals, some of whom have gone on to serve on City commissions and the City Council. The classes are held on Monday evenings and combine in-person and virtual sessions, along with two practical Saturday field trips. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony and a special presentation before the City Council.
The application deadline for the Planning Academy is 5 p.m. on January 24, open to all Sacramento residents, business owners, and those working with community organizations in the city. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply online, with details available on the academy’s dedicated webpage. For more information or assistance, applicants can contact the Planning Academy team via email at [email protected].
