In a disturbing turn of events in Antelope, a Sacramento County father has been charged with the murder of his one-year-old son. Reports from ABC10 confirm that 28-year-old Andrey Demskiy is faced with charges that include both murder and assault following an incident at his family's home last Friday.
Demskiy's arraignment took place on Tuesday, deeply affecting those present in the courtroom when he appeared to quickly smile during the proceeding. Amid the charges, Demskiy's public defender, Norman Dawson, commented on his client's mental state, saying, "He's had a clear, significant mental health issue and we will be investigating that thoroughly," in a statement obtained by ABC10. The statement raises crucial concerns about the role mental health may have played in the tragedy.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, deputies had responded to the family's residence on the morning of the incident after receiving reports of a family disturbance. CBS Sacramento provided details of the response, which included authorities being forced to enter the home after Demskiy refused to open the door. Inside, they discovered the gruesome scene and detained Demskiy after a physical altercation.
The reaction to the crime has been one of horror and disbelief. Journalist Ruslan Gurzhiy told ABC10, "A young person that just supposedly killed his one-year-old baby, and he's smiling, looking to the judge, looking at his lawyer, defender. That was something weird."
As the legal process continues, a GoFundMe has been set up to support Micah’s mother, who is pregnant and unemployed. Demskiy remains in custody without bail, with the next court hearing scheduled for March 13.
