Demskiy's arraignment took place on Tuesday, deeply affecting those present in the courtroom when he appeared to quickly smile during the proceeding. Amid the charges, Demskiy's public defender, Norman Dawson, commented on his client's mental state, saying, "He's had a clear, significant mental health issue and we will be investigating that thoroughly," in a statement obtained by ABC10. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, deputies had responded to the family's residence on the morning of the incident after receiving reports of a family disturbance.
