The latest update from the National Weather Service in Sacramento brings both good and bad news for Northern Californians. Early risers in the Sacramento area may have noticed dense fog, reducing visibility in parts of the central and southern Sacramento Valley, the Delta, and the northern San Joaquin Valley. However, clearer skies are expected by mid-afternoon, just in time for college football Conference Championship Saturday.
The region will experience a slight cooldown, with highs dropping to the low 60s across the Valley, due to an incoming weather system weakening the current high-pressure ridge. Starting Sunday afternoon and continuing into Tuesday, breezy conditions are expected, with wind gusts possibly reaching 30 mph. These northerly winds will help clear the fog and haze, improving air quality and bringing clearer skies.
Looking ahead, unsettled weather may be on the horizon, with a trough from the Gulf of Alaska predicted to bring more significant changes by the end of next week. As of now, the National Weather Service anticipates a potential rain and snow event starting Friday, with a 30-70% chance of at least an inch of rain in the Valley, and a heightened probability of precipitation in the mountains and northern sections of the Sacramento Valley. Snow enthusiasts have something to watch, too: there's a 40-70% chance that the higher elevations could see 12 inches or more of snowfall. Though details are yet to be fully ironed out, residents should prepare for a drop in snow levels to approximately 5,000 feet and valley temperatures cooling to the mid to upper 50s.
For those traveling by air, visibility concerns are primarily in the Southern Sacramento and Northern San Joaquin Valleys with MVFR and possible local IFR/LIFR conditions due to fog until 18Z Saturday, yet general VFR conditions are expected to persist over interior NorCal for the next 24 hours, while surface winds should remain below 12 KTS outside of localised gusts – travelers might encounter this along mountains and foothill regions until 18Z Saturday, but increasing north to east winds are forecast after 12Z Sunday. Residents and visitors alike are reminded to stay updated as these weather patterns develop.
