The city of San Antonio witnessed a tragic accident last week as a man was struck and killed by a train in the downtown area. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as 26-year-old Rafael Mendez. According to KSAT, Mendez died from blunt force injuries and his death has been ruled an accident.
Details provided by the San Antonio Police Department reveal that the incident occurred on Thursday in the 1300 block of West Martin Street, near the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Mendez reportedly attempted to cross between two stopped rail cars and was standing on the coupling when the cars unexpectedly began to move. This led to him falling under the moving train, where he was run over and sustained fatal injuries to his legs.
The unpredictability of large, powerful machines like trains often leaves little room for error, which in this case, had irreversible consequences. Despite being near an area familiar with the hustles and bustle of downtown traffic, the specific section of the tracks where the event unfolded was not a designated pedestrian crossing, adding a layer of risk to Mendez's fateful decision.
As reported by KTSA, onlookers witnessed Mendez falling underneath the rail cars as he tried to escape. The city's response and any actions to improve safety are not yet clear.
