The San Antonio Zoo has introduced a new member to its animal family, Waffles, a female Reticulated giraffe from the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. This addition supports the zoo’s efforts in the conservation of the species, as reported by KSAT. Waffles has transitioned to the Naylor Savanna, in line with the Species Survival Plan, which focuses on maintaining genetically diverse and sustainable animal populations. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

Waffles has unique spots, each as distinct as a human fingerprint, highlighting the natural camouflage of her species. She also features a distinctive hourglass-shaped marking on her neck, as reported by KENS 5. Visitors can view her through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the zoo's new giraffe barn. According to zoo officials and her previous caretakers at Fossil Rim, Waffles is curious, enjoys eating, and shows maternal instincts, which are important as female giraffes typically reach sexual maturity between three and four years of age.

Tim Morrow, the President and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, expressed excitement over the new arrival, saying, "Waffles’ arrival is a moment for celebration at the zoo and the next step in building our herd for future breeding,” according to an interview obtained by KSAT. Morrow further emphasized her significance to the zoo's conservation efforts and the unique experience she offers to the community.

In response to the recent proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list three subspecies of northern giraffes as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, Waffles' presence highlights the declining numbers of these animals. Zoo officials encourage visitors to welcome her and learn about the importance of giraffe conservation. Additionally, Longnecks Bar & Grill is offering waffle flights through December 31, inspired by Waffles' name and coat pattern, as a thematic treat for guests.
