San Diego's Border Patrol agents have once again made significant inroads in their ongoing battle against narcotics trafficking. A recent operation on Interstate 5 by San Clemente Station agents led to the confiscation of over 100 pounds of cocaine with an impressive street value estimated at $793,000. This intervention unfolded last week when agents pulled over a vehicle suspected of scouting for drug smugglers, according to a Customs and Border Protection press release.

In a coordinated sequence of events, while interrogating the first driver near the Basilone Road exit, agents discovered a second vehicle at a nearby rest area. Deploying a trained Border Patrol K-9, the agents' suspicions were confirmed when the dog signaled the need for a more thorough inspection of an aftermarket compartment underneath the rear seat. Wrapped in plastic, the contents tested positive for cocaine, as agents found two additional compartments under the front seats laden with 40 packages of the drug.

"I applaud the great work and vigilance of the men and women of the San Diego Sector Border Patrol," said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel, emphasizing the relentless efforts to dismantle the operations of transnational criminal organizations. Both drivers, along with the narcotics and vehicles, were handed over to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office as the case progressed toward state prosecution.

Keeping up with the momentum, the San Diego Sector Border Patrol has recorded the second-highest cocaine seizure in two decades for Fiscal Year 2024. Alongside cocaine, agents have seized substantial amounts of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl, showcasing the gravity of the drug problem lurking at our nation's borders.

Facing a complex challenge that knows no bounds, the U.S. Border Patrol urges the public to remain alert and report suspicious activity by contacting 911 or the San Diego Sector at (619) 498-9900.
