In an unprecedented stride for representation in the emergency medical services, the first all-women cohort of EMT cadets has graduated from the Earn While You Learn academy, a collaboration between AMR and Miramar College, celebrated last Wednesday's ceremony. According to the San Diego Miramar College, the program offered these women free tuition, covered textbook costs, wage compensation for classroom time, and in-field training hours.
The innovative program addresses financial hurdles head-on, paying cadets as employees of AMR during their 16-week training period. "Financial concerns can be an issue," said AMR spokesperson Darren Pudgil, as per the San Diego Union-Tribune. Currently earning $18.22 an hour post-graduation and required to work at least six months for AMR, the graduates also receive medical, dental, and vision insurance benefits.
Engaging in hands-on learning, the graduates mastered various EMT skills, from ambulance operations to pediatric care. Preparing to bolster a workforce wherein, as noted by the U.S. Census Bureau data and stated by Jacqueline Hester, dean of Public Safety at Miramar College, women constitute about a third of EMTs nationally. "Each of you bring your unique experiences, perspectives and strengths to the table," Hester said in a ceremony that was held in Kearny Mesa at AMR's regional headquarters, praising the graduates for their contributions that go beyond medical emergencies, as quoted by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
