San Francisco-based Coast Guard aviator Lt. Cmdr. Jacob Conrad was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), a highly esteemed military decoration, during a ceremony held at the Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco yesterday morning. This recognition is a testament to Conrad's exceptional bravery and skillful piloting during an arduous rescue mission in Yolo County on December 29, 2023.
The ceremony was led by Rear Adm. Joseph Buzzella, commander of Coast Guard District Eleven. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Conrad was acknowledged for his "heroism while participating in aerial flight" as he commanded the aircraft during a night fraught with perilous weather conditions and technical challenges. His fellow crew members, co-pilot Lt. j.g. Thomas Smith, Petty Officer 3rd Class Jordan Sanchez, and Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Romano had earlier been awarded Air Medals for their roles in the same mission.
Conrad's mission involved rescuing two individuals stranded on a cliff in abysmal weather. One of the victims had fallen a hundred feet, suffering severe injuries. Conrad and his MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew had to respond post-haste, venturing into the night to reach the survivor’s location. They were confronted by severe storms and were forced to make an emergency landing due to the treacherous conditions, including aircraft icing and hazardous terrain.
Despite these obstacles, Conrad completed the rescue operation at the break of dawn. After overcoming an internal communications failure, Conrad navigated the aircraft through a narrow, fog-covered valley before precisely hovering over the survivor's location. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, while "maintaining an exact position" and facing critical fuel levels, he skillfully maneuvered the helicopter, deploying the rescue swimmer and basket to recover the injured survivor safely. The press release details how Conrad bravely returned to save the second individual and two rescuers, even as the winds picked up. All this is done while piloting the helicopter at nearly its maximum power output.
The Distinguished Flying Cross is the highest award in the United States for aerial achievement, for acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement while flying. Established on July 2, 1926, it honors members of the U.S. Armed Forces for their distinguished contributions since April 6, 1917.
