The San José Police Department has added a new feature to its interactive crime-tracking tool. This dashboard can filter crime statistics by City Council Districts, giving residents a hyper-local look at public safety in their neighborhoods. This new dashboard, as reported by the San José Police Department, builds on an initial rollout from July, reflecting a broader range of data submitted to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). In an attempt to quickly address community needs, this update was launched ahead of schedule, offering preliminary data that is both accessible and informative.
Accessible via the San José Police Department's website, this new tool uses Microsoft Power BI technology and is found under the "Records" tab. According to SJPD Chief of Police Paul Joseph, "This new crime incidents dashboard is a vital step in enhancing transparency and community engagement." He emphasized the data's empowerment, "allowing residents to explore trends and gain insights specific to their neighborhoods.."
San José Mayor Matt Mahan voiced his approval, stating that he took public office with the intention "to hold government accountable through greater focus on the basics, like public safety, and better use of data and technology." He expressed that the dashboard aligns with this ethos, making crime statistics more accessible to the public and serving as a benchmark for the effectiveness of neighborhood safety initiatives, as per the San José Police Department.
