A tragic incident unfolded in the city of Sanford last night when 21-year-old Terance Darnell Pope was shot to death in the parking lot of a Best Buy. The Sanford Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 8 p.m. at the location on 1501 Rinehart Road following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Pope with an injury, and he was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
The motivation behind the shooting is currently unclear. Police have not established whether Pope was a customer of the electronics store or whether an incident that began elsewhere culminated in the busy retail parking lot. "Right now, we do not have a lot of information on this investigation. We know that he was in that parking lot. We don’t know why. We don’t know if he was a patron of the store. We don’t know if something occurred on the roadway and ended there," a Sanford police spokeswoman conveyed in the statement detailed by ClickOrlando.
In a news conference held the next day, it was announced that investigators were looking into a range of possibilities and had some leads, although it's unclear if Pope was the specific target of the attack. The police are now calling on the community for assistance. “It’s the shopping season just before the holidays at a major complex of stores. We know that there had to be people in that area that saw something, so we are imploring the pubic to please contact the Sanford Police Department,” the police spokeswoman said, as reported by ClickOrlando.
Police are also reviewing surveillance camera footage from Best Buy and surrounding stores, hoping the material may provide critical evidence. Terance Darnell Pope, a young man whose life ended abruptly, was remembered as an athlete who played college football at Davenport University in Michigan and was part of their roster for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons. At this time, investigators are asking anyone in the area who may have seen something or anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Sanford Police Department, according to FOX 35 Orlando.
Anyone with information that could help this investigation has been urged to contact the Sanford Police Department or Crimeline at 800-423-8477. Updates will be shared with the public as they become available.
