Santa Monica's fight against homelessness has charged ahead with a recent City Council decision. The council approved agreements to develop 130 affordable homes, including 40 designated for supportive housing with onsite services, on city-owned properties along Wilshire Boulevard, according to the City of Santa Monica. These future residences will be a collaboration with Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC) and are part of Santa Monica's broader initiative to tackle housing insecurity.

The revised proposal, which received the go-ahead in August following directions from the City Council, has been shaped by community feedback. A prime location along Euclid Street and another on Wilshire Boulevard will feature 48 family apartments and 82 senior apartments, respectively. A notable shift from the original proposal involves relocating the supportive housing apartments from Euclid to 14th Street, exclusively for seniors aged 55 and older, as reported by Santa Monica's official press release.

In the finance department, Santa Monica has dedicated a $13.5 million loan from its Housing Trust Funds to HCHC for the development, $6 million of which will be funneled into acquiring the property at 1402 Wilshire Blvd. Construction is expected to commence in spring 2026, with completion slated for 2027. The City Council's unanimous decision underscores its commitment to expanding affordable housing options, with Heather Averick, Housing and Human Services Director, noting, "I’m looking forward to having 130 beautiful and safe homes for Santa Monicans who live and work in our city," as stated by the City of Santa Monica.
