
Sarasota County experienced significant traffic disruptions Thursday after two separate incidents on key roadways, resulting in lane closures and an FHP trooper suffering minor injuries. The first incident involved a semi-trailer crash that led to the closure of all three northbound lanes of I-75 near Fruitville Road, as reported by WFLA. Authorities directed motorists to seek alternative routes while the crash was being managed.
In a separate event on the same day, an FHP trooper, operating his marked cruiser, struck the rear of a stopped pickup truck on Fruitville Road, the trooper having failed to properly halt his vehicle behind the 18-year-old driver's Dodge pickup truck, "failed to stop" behind the vehicle causing a crash that resulted in the patrol car becoming wedged under the truck, this according to a report by the WTSP, who detailed the crash occurring around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection near Founders Club Drive.
The trooper involved in the crash on Fruitville Road sustained only minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for evaluation, while the young driver of the pickup was unharmed. The road was temporarily closed for about 45 minutes but has since reopened, as FOX 13 News reported traffic moving again in both directions later in the day.
The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances behind the collision, in which a marked cruiser operated by a trooper unexpectedly collided with the rear of a pickup truck the details of this incident remaining sparse shortly after the roads were cleared and normal traffic flow was restored. Drivers who frequent these sections of Sarasota are advised to stay alert for potential residual effects of the day's incidents and adhere to traffic laws to prevent further occurrences.
