Residents in the city of Schofield may soon benefit from a modest yet significant expansion of recreational spaces if a recent grant application proves successful. The city has officially lodged a request with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) hoping to secure funds that would assist in acquiring a new parcel of land. Through the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, the city is seeking a 50% matching grant which, if approved, would facilitate the purchase of 0.13 acres intended to enhance an existing city park and provide public access to Lake Wausau.
According to details shared by the DNR, this small but strategic acquisition in Marathon County offers potential for a variety of outdoor activities. Residents would be able to revel in fishing, hiking, limited trapping, picnicking, water access and simply appreciating nature. However, the DNR is already anticipating the possibility of restricting hunting and modifying trapping regulations in this area.
