The Seattle Police Department is set for a top-down reshuffle with imminent command staff changes ahead of the new chief's arrival, according to an update from the interim chief of police. As the force navigates a period of transition, lingering questions about the successor's identity persist, remaining the subject of speculation among the media and within the ranks of the department itself.
In a detailed briefing, the interim chief expressed that until he steps down, it's business as usual—with his departure bringing a need for significant leadership changes to ensure "continuity of operations." Among the shifts announced is the retirement of Deputy Chief Eric Barden, a veteran with 38 years on the force, currently preoccupied with personal family matters. Barden's departure date is yet to be confirmed, however, his absence from headquarters will begin Monday, as per an official statement obtained by SPD Blotter.
Assistant Chief Yvonne Underwood is set to rise to the role of Acting Deputy Chief once she's back from vacation next week. A seasoned member of the department, her extensive know-how is touted as key in overseeing the array of patrol and investigative operations the department conducts. In another career move, Captain Lori Aagard is anticipated to become the Acting Assistant Chief over Professional Standards before year-end, leaving behind her commendable tenure as the lead at the North Precinct.
Each leadership appointment appears carefully considered; both A/C Underwood and Captain Aagard have been praised for their commitment and effectiveness in their roles, described as individuals who embody the force's ethos and dedication to community service. "Rebuilding trust within SPD has been my top priority," the interim chief stated on the SPD Blotter, expressing his confidence that the path of progress laid out will be steadfastly pursued by these leaders.
