As President Joe Biden's term continues, U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nevada, is pushing for stronger protections for immigrants facing uncertainty. Speaking on Capitol Hill, she called for renewing Temporary Protected Status and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. "For Dreamers, the United States is their home. It's the only country they have ever known, and they have more than proven their loyalty to this country," Cortez Masto said, according to News 3 LV.
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada emphasized the importance of immigrant workers in places like Las Vegas, especially in tourism and service jobs. She said, "This has been an ongoing effort for all of us here and were going to continue to be a voice for people who work alongside Americans to make this country what it is." Cortez Masto and other Senate Democrats called for immigration reform, including border security and protections for immigrants from unstable countries. They urged President Biden to extend Temporary Protected Status for people from Ecuador, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, as Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador is set to end in March. Jose Cabrera, a Temporary Protected Status holder from El Salvador, said, "I came to ask President Biden to extend my permission and ask more for more time for all people who have TPS so that we can live peacefully in this country," as reported by FOX5 Vegas.
A group of 26 Republican governors, including Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, backed President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration policies, especially his focus on deporting criminals, gang members, and terrorists. They said, "Republican governors remain fully committed to supporting the Trump Administration’s efforts to deport dangerous criminals, gang members, and terrorists who are in this country illegally," and promised to protect the country: "Together, we will continue to defend the American people, uphold the rule of law, and ensure our nation remains safe and secure for future generations. We stand ready to utilize every tool at our disposal." At the same time, Trump has hinted he might work with Democrats to protect Dreamers, moving away from his earlier position of ending certain protections, as stated by News 3 LV.
