Early this morning, a severe wrong-way collision on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County injured six individuals. According to NBC New York, emergency services were dispatched to the scene near exit 17/Lincoln Avenue in Rye Brook at around 12:10 a.m., where they discovered the driver of the wrong-way vehicle severely injured. The driver was taken to a hospital and is reported to be in a precarious condition that they might not survive.
The other car involved, carrying five passengers, also saw its occupants taken quickly to Westchester Medical Center with injuries that were described as not life-threatening. The northbound side of the parkway was shut down to facilitate an investigation but has since been reopened. The circumstances leading up swiftly to the crash are still being probed by authorities.
As reported by The New York Post, photos from the scene depicted significant damage to both vehicles involved, with one of them "ripped apart." The county police's Accident Investigation Team, along with detectives from the General Investigations Unit, is currently undertaking a full investigation to discern the events that precipitated this horrifying incident.
The vehicles involved had to be towed from the scene around 6:30 a.m., as stated by the police, and the aftermath of the crash led to traffic being redirected onto Lincoln Avenue until all six lanes of the northbound parkway were reopened. This update was confirmed by Westchester News 12. The ongoing investigation is expected to further clarify the cause and lay down to rest unanswered questions about the night's tragic events.
