The aftermath of a tragic shooting in South Nashville has the local community reeling as police work to gather leads on the incident that left one teenager dead and two others injured. According to WSMV, the Metro Nashville Police Department is actively investigating the shooting, which occurred outside an "after-hours club" on Murfreesboro Pike on Sunday morning.
The fatal incident has been marked by sorrow and the stark reminder that violence can end young lives in an instant. The police have identified the deceased victim as Ashley Dominguez, an 18-year-old whose life was abruptly cut short in the flow of gunfire. The two surviving victims, both 19-year-old women, incurred injuries and were treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center before being released, as reported by FOX 17. Witnesses have come forward, noting that a heated dispute preceded the shooting that targeted a car with five passengers, including Dominguez.
As the MNPD presses forward with interviews, the affected community has spoken out about the unsettling increase in violence. Sounds of the gunshots were likened to "cannon fire" by Daniel Holmes, a resident who lives in proximity to the club where the incident took place. In a statement obtained by WKRN, Holmes articulated his shock, "It sounded like cannon fire. I mean, it was so loud, I mean, you could hear the reverberations off the buildings."
The community's call for an increased police presence suggests a pervasive sense of unease that stewards its concerns for safety amongst civilians. Kennedi Lamb, a newcomer to the South Nashville area, told WKRN she no longer feels secure walking at night, "I try and dress as unappeasing as possible." This sentiment echoes the disquiet felt by many and the adjustments residents feel compelled to make in the wake of such violence.
