Springfield police officers apprehended two suspects and confiscated two illegal firearms, including a ghost gun, following a ShotSpotter activation early yesterday morning. The incident occurred around 1:55 a.m. in the 400 block of Union Street, according to a report released by the Springfield Police Department. Officers who were on patrol nearby quickly responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered three individuals near Union Street and Walnut Street. It was during this interaction that an officer noticed a firearm protruding from the hoodie pocket of a subject who was later identified as Rashae McKinney. In an attempt to evade law enforcement, McKinney began to flee but was promptly detained. A ghost gun—with a 17-round capacity and loaded with nine rounds—was discovered on his person, along with additional ammunition in his fanny pack.
Another individual, Brian Grant, attempted to escape by running while clutching his waistband. He was pursued and arrested on the 400 block of State Street. Law enforcement recovered a loaded firearm from Grant, which had been previously reported stolen in Springfield. The contents of Grant's fanny pack included oxycodone, clonazepam, and dextroamphetamine.
The third person present was questioned by the officers and subsequently released. Additionally, a shell casing was found at the site of the ShotSpotter activation, adding to the evidence gathered from the encounter. Brian Grant, 21, faces multiple charges, including carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of class B and E drugs. Rashae McKinney, also 21, is charged with offenses related to carrying a loaded large capacity firearm and ammunition without an FID Card.
