Last week, St. Johns County Commissioner Christian Whitehurst paid tribute to a local entertainment gem. In a ceremony before the regular county commissioners meeting, Whitehurst recognized the Venardos Circus for its contribution to the culture and community vibe. The circus performed a stint right there in the rotunda, teasing their upcoming full shows at the St. Augustine Amphitheater slated for Thursday, December 19, to January 5.
Having spun its magic since its 2014 inception at the L.A. County Fair, the Venardos Circus has been reinventing the American Circus game with its Broadway-esque pizzazz. Its blend of theatre and long-established circus entertainment has won the hearts of audiences all through the land. St. Augustine, in particular, harbors a sweet spot in its heart for the circus since its first performance there in 2017, which ushered in a period of success that cemented Venardos Circus as a tour de force in the community.
In his address, Whitehurst highlighted the circus's local roots. "For nearly a decade, this unique Broadway-style circus has dazzled audiences across the country, and we are thrilled to welcome them back to St. Augustine for their special anniversary tour," Whitehurst said. The commissioner also noted the circus's philanthropic work, mentioning support for hurricane victims in Asheville, North Carolina. "Venardos Circus has been an incredible partner in our community," he affirmed. according to a statement from St. Johns County's website.
The troupe's founder, Kevin Venardos, has also planted roots in the area, with investments including land for a possible winter training spot. The Commissioner spoke to this as well, pointing out the circus's acts of generosity within St. Johns County. The circus's integration into the fabric of the local community has been exemplified through action and art, as they continue to mesmerize with their skill and showmanship.
According to the statement, Whitehurst concluded his remarks with an encouraging sentiment toward the circus's special tour, "A Decade of Dreams." As families and individuals venture into the holiday season, the commissioner's words were an invitation to partake in the joy and wonder that Venardos Circus promises to bring. "It’s a celebration of dreams realized and a testament to what can happen when passion and perseverance come together," he expressed in the statement, acknowledging not only the success of the circus but the capacity it has for inspiring others to follow their own dreams.
