The sudden suspension of operations at Homer G. Phillips Memorial Hospital in St. Louis has left many city leaders and community members grappling with the implications for healthcare and employment in the region. Announced just yesterday, the closure has led to an immediate furlough of the hospital's healthcare workers, stirring swift action from local government officials.
In a concerted effort to address the fallout, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones along with the Department of Health and the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE), are working together to assist the affected employees. "My thoughts are with the workers who were unjustifiably impacted by this sudden closure," Mayor Jones said. "However, I know thoughts must be matched by action, and I’m proud of the quick coordination happening within our City departments to support these workers," as per the City of St. Louis official release.
The abrupt decision to halt operations at the hospital, which came right before the holiday season, evoked criticism of developers Bob Clark and Paul McKee. The Mayor condemned their actions for continuing, to impede progress in the northern parts of the city, particularly harmful as the holidays approach. Dr. Matifadza Hlatshwayo Davis, MD, MPH, FIDSA, also expressed disappointment, noting the hospital's connection to the African American community. "The name Homer G. Phillips carries profound historical significance for St. Louis and the Black community," Dr. Hlatshwayo Davis said. "It is a name that symbolizes advocacy for justice and equity in healthcare," detailed by the City of St. Louis.
Officials are now turning their focus to providing immediate support for those left jobless by the closure. SLATE Director Fredrecka McGlown urged those affected to seek out the employment assistance available through their services. "Anyone who has been impacted by this closure, please contact SLATE immediately to be provided with employment assistance," McGlown told the community. The City of St. Louis goal remains to connect residents with opportunities that will fortify, the economic landscape in St. Louis City.
