Suspect Apprehended in Sacramento After Carjacking and Shooting at Deputies

Last night in Sacramento, a dramatic chase unfolded as sheriff's deputies apprehended a man suspected of carjacking in San Francisco earlier that day. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11 PM on Thursday, December 26, patrol deputies spotted a vehicle on Sunrise Boulevard and Coloma Road that was reportedly stolen. The ensuing pursuit ended with suspect Anthony Hurtado, 34, offering gunfire but eventually surrendering.

When deputies tried to pull over the vehicle near Winding Way and San Juan Road, the suspect Hurtado sped up and began shooting at the deputies. Though deputies chased, they never fired back. “As the Deputies activated their overhead emergency lights to initiate a vehicle stop near Winding Way and San Juan Road, the suspect in that vehicle, later identified as 34-year-old Anthony Hurtado, began to accelerate in an attempt to get away. He then reached out of the driver’s side window, pointed a handgun toward the Deputies’ vehicles, and fired several rounds,” detailed a post on the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

Miraculously, no injuries were reported following the incident. The area was canvassed for damage, but none was found. At the scene, crime scene investigators collected the firearm used by Hurtado, as well as spent shell casings. He now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder.

Following Hurtado’s arrest, he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. He awaits his initial court appearance scheduled on Monday in Sacramento, as he is currently held without the possibility of bail. The San Francisco Police Department is also expected to press charges about the original carjacking incident, as applicable.
