Authorities apprehended a 40-year-old man as a suspect in an arson case in Seattle's Mount Baker neighborhood. According to reports by the Seattle Police Department Blotter. The incident, which led to considerable water damage in the apartment building located at the 2800 block of South McClellan Street, occurred on Tuesday evening.
Police officers were called to the scene around 7:24 p.m. following reports of a blaze engulfing a unit within the building. When they arrived, fire department personnel were already working to extinguish the flames found in the unit. Luckily, the apartment was empty as the resident was not present then. Post-investigation by the Seattle Fire Department pointed to a deliberate act of arson, with fire marshals finding evidence of disassembled bottle rockets and firecrackers alongside tape on the fire sprinkler heads preventing them from activating. What was more, someone had removed all smoke detectors from the premises.
As indicated in the SPD's official release, the fire led to unanticipated water damage within the structure. Identification of the suspect, also a resident of the damaged apartment, was made possible due to probable cause established during the investigation process by the officers.
After returning to the building, the suspect found police awaiting him. They immediately took him into custody, and he was subsequently booked into the King County Jail under suspicion of arson as well as due to unrelated warrants that were previously issued in his name. The case remains under investigation, and the full details of the charges have yet to be disclosed.
