The Wilmington Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that killed 20-year-old Marquis Lopez Jr. on October 17, 2021, on West 3rd Street. Lopez was found with gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital. Detective Joseph Wicks led the investigation, which pointed to 26-year-old Michael Bernier as the suspect, according to the Wilmington Police Department.
After an investigation, the case was presented to the New Castle County Grand Jury on Thursday. Bernier, already in custody in Philadelphia for another matter, was indicted. He was arrested on Tuesday and faces charges of First-Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm During a Felony, as reported by the Wilmington Police Department.
Bernier was arrested and arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 20, with a $1,000,000 cash-only bail. He is being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution. Police have not revealed details about the shooting's motive, but the charges indicate it was a planned crime.
