Arson is suspected in several recent fires across Massachusetts as local fire officials seek assistance in hunting down potential perpetrators; the flames have razed structures from Southbridge to Chelsea, from Brockton to Franklin, causing not just property damage but also uprooting lives and creating widespread concern.
In Southbridge, a blaze on Union Street that resulted in the displacement of nearly 30 people last month has been declared arson. The officials are circulating a $5,000 reward for leads on this fire, according to WHDH. Meanwhile, a fire at a warehouse on Forbes Street in Chelsea, where people were nearby, has been deemed suspicious. Chelsea officials are also offering a reward for relevant information, as reported by NBC Boston.
Brockton has experienced several fire outbreaks this year, including a house that caught fire twice—once in March and again this Tuesday, while it had remained empty since the first incident. Deputy Fire Chief Jeffrey Marchetti, as per NBC Boston, noted, "They seek shelter, trying to get out of the elements, and they come up with some creative ways to stay warm." He also added, "Unfortunately, those ways aren’t very safe and we’ve had some significant fires just recently in vacant buildings."
In light of these events, officials throughout the state have issued calls to owners of vacant properties, urging them to better secure their buildings to prevent unauthorized and potentially dangerous entry as colder weather sets in. Cold temperatures tend to increase incidents of squatting and consequent accidental fires, especially when those seeking refuge turn to unsafe heating methods. The Massachusetts Arson Watch Reward Program has also been highlighted, emphasizing its offer of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of arsonists.
Investigations continue into the case of a Franklin church fire set in October, where fortunately no injuries were reported, but the search for suspects remains ongoing. Authorities are connecting the narratives of these seemingly disparate yet similarly devastating events. Details regarding these incidents are still unfolding as investigators piece together the puzzle of these blazes, which have not only damaged property but also shaken the sense of security in affected communities.
