A string of bank robberies and an alarmingly bold daylight robbery attempt at a local Dollar General store ended with the suspect in handcuffs this past month. On October 2, at First South Financial Bank at 633 South Highland Street where, a man armed with a gun demanded money from the tellers. After a failed attempt to gain access to a secure door, the gunman proceeded to a teller window, where he obtained an undisclosed amount of cash. According to the Memphis Police Department on their facebook page, the suspect, identified as Sherman Weakley, pulled off a similar heist at the same bank location nearly a month later, this time leaving behind a traceable clue—a tracking device stashed among the stolen currency in his escape.
A warrant issued on December 4, officers observed Weakley engaging in what appeared to be another robbery last Tuesday. After attempting a robbery at Dollar General, located at 1324 Getwell Road, investigators caught him on the run. Weakley, armed again, had entered the store and quickly left, prompting an officer's response to the scene of another incident, as reported by the Memphis Police Department.
Memphis Police Department continued their watchful vigilance, which led them to witness Weakley entering a residence at 1364 Chadwick Circle. Upon exiting the house, officers attempted apprehension. Nonetheless, Weakley dashed in a desperate bid to evade capture until the officers managed to detain him following a brief chase. He is now facing multiple counts of Aggravated Robbery and Evading Arrest on Foot, with bonds amounting to a combined $200,000.00. The reports #2411020157ME & #2412025921ME provide detailed accounts of the incidents surrounding Weakley's apprehension and charges.
