The saga of Svetlana Dali, the woman accused of stowing away on a cross-Atlantic Delta flight from New York to Paris, has taken a new turn. According to the FBI and as reported by CBS News, Dali was arrested again while attempting to travel into Canada. Dali was mandated to wear an ankle monitor with GPS after her bond hearing, with strict instructions to not leave Philadelphia unless for court, legal consultations, or pre-trial services in New York. However, authorities allege that Dali removed her ankle monitor and was captured on a bus to Canada.
Initial details about the new arrest come after law enforcement sources told ABC News that Dali had cut off her ankle bracelet, leading to a person she was staying with in Philadelphia alerting authorities. An arrest warrant for bail jumping was then issued out of the Eastern District of New York. The Russian national was "taken into custody in Buffalo" yesterday afternoon, as she was en route on a Greyhound bus trying, but failing to surreptitiously cross into Canada.
This recurring legal issue for Dali follows her initial detainment in early December, when she managed to board a Delta flight on Nov. 26, without any evidence of a boarding pass, as per the surveillance footage presented in the criminal complaint. The complaint, covered by CBS News, details how Dali was refused entry at a TSA checkpoint due to the absence of a boarding pass, yet somehow found a way through a special lane intended for airline employees. This remarkable breach occurred despite the TSA's report highlighting it as the "only reported case of unauthorized access" in a period where over 18 million passengers were screened.
After her first interception, Dali was flown back to New York, and eventually, as shared by a statement obtained by ABC News, she "was not admitted to French territory due to lack of a valid travel document (visa)" and thus "placed in the waiting area" until her return to the U.S. Dali, who holds a U.S green card was identified by the French Ministry of the Interior as a Russian national. With her second arrest occurring this Monday, Dali is scheduled to again appear in court on Tuesday afternoon. Her legal journey illustrates a continuous effort to defy international flight and immigration regulations, an issue that the relevant authorities are presently addressing. Dali is now facing charges of obtaining transportation on an aircraft without consent.
