Tacoma is set to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a celebration that promises to strengthen the bonds within its local community. Slated for January 20, 2025, the City of Tacoma’s Events and Recognitions Committee (CERC) is bringing back the annual event with a focus on unity and collaboration. According to the official announcement, the theme of "Building Bridges" looks to inspire community members to foster meaningful connections.
Starting from 1 p.m. at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center, the program will showcase stories celebrating the collective efforts and shared purposes that drive positive change within Tacoma. Moments from the event, planned by the CERC, will be dedicated to presenting the Lifetime Service Award to Shawn Durnen and the Emerging Leader Award to Brian Gatewood. With the tangible creation of bridges being the symbol of unity, the intent of the event is to demonstrate the impact of working together for the greater community benefit.
Prior to the main program, a community outreach fair is scheduled at 11 a.m. in the GTCC lobby. Local organizations looking to take part have until January 7, 2025, to apply for a space where they can engage the public with their missions and resources. Details regarding the application process can be found on the application page.
"The City’s Events and Recognitions Committee is excited to honor our community by celebrating its rich diversity, artistic talents, and unwavering strength," stated CERC Chair Jessica Johnston. A goal that's particularly noteworthy during the celebration is crafting a foundation for future generations. A combination of arts, culture, and dialogues of unity aim to pay tribute to Dr. King's enduring influence on the community.
