Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has arrived in Hawaii for a diplomatic visit, aimed at strengthening Taiwan's international ties amid rising tensions with China. While the visit may appear routine, it signals Taiwan's ongoing efforts to secure support on the global stage, according to CNN.
President Lai of Taiwan visited Hawaii, where he was greeted by local officials. The Hawaii governor called it a "momentous occasion." During his trip, Lai emphasized the importance of peace and the dangers of war. His visit comes at a sensitive time, with questions about Taiwan’s defense and U.S.-Taiwan relations. Lai said, "I want to use the values of democracy, peace, and prosperity to expand our cooperation with allies and show the world that Taiwan is not just a model of democracy but a vital force for peace and stability," as reported by Hawaii News Now and CNN.
President Lai is visiting local leaders and the East West Center to discuss regional issues. China has strongly criticized the visit, with a statement saying, "China strongly condemns the US’s arranging for Lai Ching-te’s ‘stopover’ and has lodged serious protests with the US." In contrast, U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda emphasized that the U.S. must "continue to stand by Taiwan to promote peace and stability and ensure that Taiwan’s future is decided only by its people." After Hawaii, President Lai will visit the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau on his first trip to the South Pacific since becoming president, as stated by Hawaii News Now and CNN.
